Who needs one
Foreigners taking up employment in Vietnam beyond the limited exemption cases. Most work-based Temporary Residence Cards (Thẻ tạm trú) require a valid work permit (or an exemption letter) first.
Eligibility — the usual criteria
- You qualify as a manager, executive, expert, or technical worker (the legal categories).
- A university degree (or equivalent) plus relevant experience — or 3–5 years' experience for a technical role.
- A clean criminal record (from your home country and, if you're already here, Vietnam).
- A fit-to-work health certificate from an approved hospital.
- A Vietnamese employer that sponsors you and holds approval to use foreign labour.
Documents we'll help you assemble
- Passport data page, valid for the permit period.
- Degree / professional certificate — notarised, consular-legalised, and translated into Vietnamese.
- Proof of experience (employer confirmation letters).
- Criminal-record check, issued within the last 6 months and legalised.
- Health certificate from an approved hospital (in Vietnam or abroad).
- Photos (4×6 cm, white background).
- Employer documents: business registration, labour-demand approval, and the job position.
Timeline
The slow part is legalising your overseas documents (degree, criminal record) — this depends on your home country and can take a few weeks. Once the dossier is complete, the Department of Home Affairs (Sở Nội vụ) issues the work permit in about 15 working days. A work permit is valid for up to 2 years and is renewable.
