If you are searching for ESTA Vietnam, the short answer is simple: ESTA is not used for Vietnam. US passport holders normally need a Vietnam eVisa, or in some cases an embassy visa, before they travel.

What is ESTA?

ESTA is the Electronic System for Travel Authorization used by the United States. It lets eligible travelers from Visa Waiver Program countries ask for authorization to travel to the US without applying for a visitor visa first.

That is why the term appears so often in travel searches. It is familiar, online and tied to airport boarding checks. But it is a US inbound travel system. It does not help an American enter another country, and it does not replace a visa for Vietnam.

Does ESTA apply to Vietnam?

No. Vietnam is not part of ESTA, and ESTA is not a Vietnam entry document. If you hold a US passport and are flying to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc as part of a mainland itinerary, or crossing by land or sea, you should assume you need a Vietnam visa unless a specific exemption fits your exact route.

Travelers confuse ESTA and Vietnam eVisa because both are online travel permissions with short names. The practical difference is destination: ESTA is for going to the United States; the Vietnam eVisa is for entering Vietnam.

What do US citizens need instead?

For most US travelers, the right document is the Vietnam eVisa. It is issued online by the Vietnam Immigration Department, can be valid for up to 90 days, and can be single-entry or multiple-entry. The official government fee is US$25 for single-entry and US$50 for multiple-entry.

The eVisa is suitable for ordinary tourism, family visits and short business visits such as meetings or conferences. You must enter details exactly as they appear in your passport, upload a passport-page image and portrait photo, choose the intended entry and exit ports, pay the government fee and download the PDF once approved.

When does a US traveler need something other than an eVisa?

A few situations deserve extra care. Frequent visitors may ask a Vietnamese embassy or consulate about the separate 1-year multiple-entry visa available to US passport holders. That is not the eVisa portal, and the embassy or consulate should confirm the current fee, stay limits and procedure.

Emergency passports, diplomatic or official passports, long stays, paid work, residence, family sponsorship and unusual entry routes may also need embassy guidance or a different immigration path. If you are unsure, do not guess at the airport: check before you pay for a non-refundable ticket or government fee.

If your trip is several weeks away, your passport is ordinary, your itinerary is simple and you are comfortable checking every field yourself, the official portal at evisa.gov.vn is the lowest-cost route.
